Search engines are important since at least
half of total internet traffic has been generated via their results. If the
products/services you sell is common i.e. there is a lot of people who sell
those, putting your web site on top of the search engines' results is vital
for your business.
Let us say, you have searched the potential
buyers, you have found out the products/services that has not been
adequately supplied yet, and you have decided what to sell. We will give you
your search engine strategy in a nut shell. Actually, the search engines are
too big subject to deal with it in a page. So we will give you the most
distilled information.
You
must find the rights keywords for your business. This issue has two
level. First; You should identify your business area and choose the
best keywords that actually represents your area. If you intends to sell
flowers, the keyword "flower" seems appropriate to focus. Second; It is not
adequate to just find a keyword, since you don't know actually that

Your
domain name must include your decided keyword/ keyword phrase. The most of
search engines prefers to put the web site whose domain includes the
searched keyword/keyword phrase on the top of their results. After your
keyword/keyword phrase analyses, you should obtain a domain name that
includes your decided keyword/keyword phrase. This operation does not
guarantees the top positions alone, but without it, it will be very very
hard to acquire the top positions. So, be wise and get a relevant domain
name.
You
should prepare your web pages according to the rules of search engines. Each
search engine has own rules to rank the web sites for a given
keyword/keyword phrase and a web page that resides on the top 10 of
google.com may not be seen within top 30 of altavista.com. These rules are
not known and those are some kind of business secrets. But you are able to
obtain useful tips on their ranking rules. Just make a search on the one of
search engines ie google.com for the keyword. After getting the result of
Google, open the web pages one by one beginning from the top. For each page
opened, save the web page on a new folder of your hard disk and give this
folder a name ie google_flower_1, google_flower_2,... Do this operation
until you saved the 10th web page of Google result. Then open them with your
favorites program (Frontpage, Dreamweaver..) one by one to make analyze
about keyword numbers and placement on the page based on criterions :
Title, description, keywords
(they are are between <head> and </head>
Body text
The names of pictures and alt
info The links. Try to
understand the shared characteristics of those 10 pages. ie they use the
keyword one time in their meta title, and the length of title is not more
than 7 word... We assure you that this process will be painful for you but it is
important to obtain the secrets rules of the search engine. If you don't

Take
care of your meta tags. After you analyze the pages of top 10, you will see
that successful web pages use these meta tags. It is not sufficient to
include your keyword(s) in your meta tags, but you must use it(them) within
your body(text) as you have seen during analyze. The sample meta tags may
be:
<title>Flowers to the World</title>
<meta name="description" content="We send flowers to anywhere on the earth">
<meta name="keywords" content="flower, flowers">
and they must reside between <head> and
</head> tags.
Do
not try to deceive search engines ie by using text whose font color is same
or nearly same of web page background, trying to cloak your web pages...
Search engines uses robots or crawlers to surf the web and index the web
pages into their databases. Trying to deceive them may cost you more than
you think. If they ban your web site, you can not ever get indexed. A
robots.txt file should be on your root directory, and should have a content
like:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /_private/
Disallow: /_derived/
Disallow: /_fpclass/
Disallow: /_notes/
Disallow: /_borders/
The robots.txt file is used by search
engines' robots and crawlers to get info about the path that they should
follow. Create a text file, assign a name it as robots and then upload it to
your root directory. You can add "Disallow: /some folder/" and tell the
robots not to crawl the specified folder.
Try
to get links toward your web site. Search engines think that if a web site
has a link toward your web site, this web site recommends your web site to
their visitors. If this web site's business is relevant with your web site's
business and has a lot of traffic, the links that you will get will be more
important for your web site.
Submit your web pages manually. Do not use the services that offers you a
submission to 1 million search engines. The biggest 10-15 search engines
generate the over 85% of all search engine's traffic and we know that some
big search engines does not prefer automatic submissions ie google.com. So
make your submissions manually. An extreme submission strategy may be not to
submit at all. Search engines become happy like a child when they found a
web site with full of information during their crawl. This may happen by
getting a link from a popular web site toward your site.
