Patrick Chanezon, a developer advocate at Google, travels the world studying what developers are doing with the latest Web technologies. We interviewed Chanezon in the real Building 43, the main building at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., about HTML5 and other bleeding-edge technologies. HTML5 is the next major revision for hypertext markup language. While work on HTML5 began in 2004 and is not expected to be “completed” for many years, adoption of parts of it into browsers began months ago and has been accelerating. “HTML5 is essentially a movement around an open standard by many browser vendors to bring capabilities (to) the browser that were available only to desktop apps before,” says Chanezon. Those new capabilities mean that such things as desktop plug-ins that have been required for video and audio will be built into browsers, he says. “So what happens right now is that developers are going to start building these much richer apps that would have been built for the desktop 20 years ago . . . as Web apps,” says Chanezon. Change also is coming for mobile devices, he says in the video. “So, I’m interested to see how the mobile world is going to evolve towards this Web development model.” Links relevant to this video include: HTML5 defined — en.wikipedia.org Reference guides (HTML5, SQL and CSS) — www.veign.com Compatability tables (HTML5, CSS3 and SVG) — a.deveria.com
