By using the hosts file in Windows, I can block any website address. But what about blocking an IP address?

In the hosts file, I write:

www.badwebsite.com 1.2.3.4

Because 1.2.3.4 IP number isn’t reachable, when my son visits the bad website, he cannot visit the site.

But if my son tries to enter the IP number of the web site instead of the domain name, he can load the website.

What should I do now? In hosts file, can I set IP numbers, instead of host names?

I have a few computers down at my workplace – most of them are still running Windows XP Pro, while others got new computers that have Windows 7 on it.

My question is that I have a few people who utilise Internet Explorer 8 and they visit certain websites to do a lot of heavy usage of uploading. I was assigned an address (IP address and web address) that needs to be placed on the “hosts” file.

After editing the hosts file, do you think it’s absolutely necessary to perform a computer restart after editing the “hosts” file or should I do a ipconfig /flushdns command to reflect the new settings? Any other suggestions?

so basically i am wondering how i would modify the hosts file in windows(and where is it located) so if i typed in one web adress it would redirect me to another url or ip. like if i typed in google i would go to yahoo instead. quick rply plz
ok dude you say the ip of google and yahoo are the same…. im almost sure thats not the case.
ok nm but you made a few typos that make it impossible to understand….. like do i type the ip adress of the website i want to redirect first and the ip adress i want to redirect to second?????

so if i wanted to redirect yahoo to google whould i type

www.yahoo.com (google’s ip adress?)

also when i try to ping each site using command prompt i get a different ip adress for yahoo.com and www.yahoo.com. arent they the same thing? same with google. if i add www. it changes.
i tried pastign

209.191.93.53 www.google.com

into the bottom of host file

then i went to yahoo .com and typed in 209.191.93.53. it just goes to yahoo………….

can i host a domain with the hosts file?

in windows or linux, there is the hosts file, can i put a .com .org or.net domain in and point it to a computer in my network with a web server and have a website if i enable port forwarding in my router?

The File Manager of many free web hosts does not work. It goes to htdocs or public folders…?

The File Manager of many free web hosts does not work. It goes to htdocs or public folders and, when clicked on these, an error message appears instead of the files of these folders.

All cookies have been cleaned, al cookies have been enabled, the security settings have been lowered, many browsers have been tried, still doesn’t work. Looks like there is another “sign-in” to get to the file manager which gets disconnected (logged out) when clicked on htdocs/public folders even though the click is done almost immediately and thus the connection does not time out.

The service providers do not know what happens and do not say anything about the browser options except the general answer to clean the cookies and go to another computer.

Similar problem exists with linkedin and I have tried many different computers, connections, IP addresses, speed, inclusive the fastest in North America.

Does anyone knows what happens. Is there any “special” browser settings or Windows XP software which may cause conflict while running?

Any ideas?

How do I add entries to a Linux hosts file when I don’t have root? “hosts” file if I do not have root access?

I want to use an alias for a hostname I log into often. But, I can’t edit the hosts file b/c it’s not my machine and I don’t have root. I can’t seem to find the answer on the web, but I’m sure it must be possible.

What can I do?
