I have a few computers down at my workplace – most of them are still running Windows XP Pro, while others got new computers that have Windows 7 on it.

My question is that I have a few people who utilise Internet Explorer 8 and they visit certain websites to do a lot of heavy usage of uploading. I was assigned an address (IP address and web address) that needs to be placed on the “hosts” file.

After editing the hosts file, do you think it’s absolutely necessary to perform a computer restart after editing the “hosts” file or should I do a ipconfig /flushdns command to reflect the new settings? Any other suggestions?

I have my own computer with PHP, MySQL, Apache, Filezilla, and Mercury installed and it works fine. I already have a website at a remote hosting site and it works great except it is a shared server and often very slow. I wanted to move all of my website that uses PHP, MySQL and Apache to my own computer because 1 I get a ton more space, 2 I barely use it, and 3 there is a local computer store in town that I think would be able to provide the internet and DNS-stuff for my computer. I want to know what the requirements are. I have Windows XP, 256 MB of RAM, 1 55 GB and 1 8 GB harddrive, and 1.3 GHz (i think). I mainly want to put it on my computer because I can do anything with it, including mail which i couldn’t use with the other and plenty of other things.
Edit: The harddrives are actually (one) 55 GB hard drive and (one) 8 GB hard drive, with a total of 63 GB. I think I have an extra 128 MB or RAM, or maybe even 256 MB, so I think I’m ok or close in that area. I am not hosting the server at my house, there is a PC store and I am probably going to have my server there with them providing the Internet. I know Linux is better, and I am probably going to get their help in installing Linux soon.

So, I was wondering if maybe there was a way to back up my computer to this space and possibly let a few others do so as well? I don’t think I’m allowed to install any applications server side. I personally am using Mac OS X Leopard, but would be interested in Windows and Linux solutions as well. Not sure what other details I might need to provide.

You might ask, why not just put the code in the actual web page, well here’s my situation: My National Honor Society Adviser wanted a website to act as an information station to reach out to other members and members of the community. I, having some knowledge in HTML, offered to create the website. After completion I consulted the school’s technology department and found that every time I wished to make an update to the site, about once a week, it would take over a week or two to make the minor change to the website, which creates a major problem. I wish only to make a small section of the index page to change when needed. This area would only consist of basic html code and would not need to link to a picture or another page. I would like to save the section on my home desktop where it can be retrieved along with the website which is located elsewhere. Or maybe the piece of code could be located on a free web-hosting server that can be easily and quickly changed if possible.

My education level in html consists of one high school semester of web page design and several hours of independent research. If it helps, my computer runs on Windows XP Home Edition SP3. I believe that my IP address is static; however when I search my IP address nothing appears–not sure if this matters or can be changed.

Thank you for your time in helping me! It is greatly appreciated!
