About to Create a Home Server… Suggestion for an OS?

I have created multiple web sites before, but have always used 3rd party shared hosting.

Recently, I created a new site, and as a learning experience, would like to host it not from a 3rd party hosting plan, but from home on a spare desktop.

I’m planning on using Apache, and a Linux OS, as I already know how to use Apache, and would like to learn more about Linux-based OS’s.

So, any suggestions on what OS I should use? Thanks in advance!

By using the hosts file in Windows, I can block any website address. But what about blocking an IP address?

In the hosts file, I write:

www.badwebsite.com 1.2.3.4

Because 1.2.3.4 IP number isn’t reachable, when my son visits the bad website, he cannot visit the site.

But if my son tries to enter the IP number of the web site instead of the domain name, he can load the website.

What should I do now? In hosts file, can I set IP numbers, instead of host names?

PHP file upload script from w3school: security question about temporary folder?

Hello. I’ve tested that script from http://www.w3schools.com/php/php_file_upload.asp that contains an upload html form and a server-side code.
After spending several hours on it now it works for me!! Both at localhost and on the web-server.

Now I understand that files goes like this: 1) from client side -> 2) temporary folder-> 3) folder with proper security level. I know that from w3school, it says: Saving the Uploaded File
The examples above create a temporary copy of the uploaded files in the PHP temp folder on the server.The temporary copied files disappears when the script ends. To store the uploaded file we need to copy it to a different location:

So, the question is about 2) – about the temporary folder:
Where does server stores that temporary file, in what temporary folder? Should the path to that folder to be changed for security reasons? Or, that folder has a restricted access so we shouldn’t worry about the security? Once it’s copied it becomes deleted. But, here are some milliseconds that file could be copied by unauthorized user?

The hosting is Linux (if needed for the proper answer).
