You need to contact yahoo (or your hosting server) and ask them those questions.

Personally i suggest http://www.bluehost.com, they have all of what you listed and more (x10!)

    1) Are you allowed to have a database on you site (if you haven’t seen Database on your editors for the site, than probably not
    2) I’m not sure what yahoo is-probably linux
    3) What do you use to create the site (programming or a panel with butttons to create the site)
    4) does yahoo geocities support php (research this yourself)
    5) ftp allows you to send files directly from a computer to a site

Sorry, but even with this info, it’s hard to work on a site unless you can put the code in directly and debug it. Most likely, he’ll need the pass; or, he could send you the code, and try to explain how to put it on.

    Good luck.

    >> 1) The ability to create a mysql database.

If you signed up for your hosting through Yahoo! Small Business, and bought the Starter, Standard or Professional package, yes, you get MySQL with that.

    >> 2) Is it a windows server or linux server?

If it is with Yahoo! Small business, it’s a *nix server. I believe Yahoo primarily hosts off FreeBSD but that shouldn’t matter unless you are getting a really, really complex install.

    >> 3) Is there a control panel? Ensim, pleask, cpanel,
    >> etc.

There is a control panel. It’s not one of those; it’s a custom designed control panel that Yahoo! set up.

    >> 4) The ability to run .php files and set
    >> permissions.

Again, assuming this is a Small Business hosting account, you can run PHP. The version and config of PHP, I’m not sure about. I’m not sure the extent of control you have on being able to set file and folder permissions, but you should be able to do so via the control panel.

    >> 5) ftp information. Should be really basic,
    >> EXAMPLE:
    >> location: ftp://overpasscreative.com
    >> username: toliver
    >> password: 123123

The short answer is, it sounds like you don’t know enough to be of help to your developer and he’s going to have to do all the heavy and the light lifting.

So, the short of it is, it makes sense for you to simply give him your user name and password and trust him not to abuse the system. Change your password once he’s done.

Again, the problem is you’re not going to be able to help yourself, so you have to trust whomever you are going to use to not screw you over. If you don’t, time to find someone else whom you do trust.

If you don’t want to give him your password, then how do you expect him to work on your site? Will you be the one to upload the files to the server? If so, would you not already know the answer to all those? Think about this; he’s asking about MySQL database, so he may be using it. If you’re not sure if you even have it, then you won’t even be able to set up the MySQL tables that he may need to set up. I think safely you should give him access to the server. My advice. To direct you where you will find answers; all you need to do is show your designer the web hosting package you have. It should have a list of what you get for your hosting package and be able to answer his questions.

Ask him to use some freehost to test it out, once everything is tested, he can give you the webpages and you upload them to your web host. You should always try to use web designers from well known websites like http://getafreelnacer.com/
