1) Install the kernel (of course) the bootloader, a shell environment and whatever daemons/software you think you will need. Recommended: sshd for remote access, httpd for webserver (such as apache or lighttpd) with PHP support, perl, mysql…
2) Depends what you want to host/do.
3) Depends on your firmware, the WRT54GL is known for its ability to run many different firmwares (usually port forwarding is on Applications & Gaming in case you have a GUI, in OpenWRT, things are different and I am not familiar with that firmware, I use DD-WRT).
4) Your computer’s IP will be given by /sbin/ifconfig
Notice that if you are to do hosting, and port forwarding, you should have your router do a Static DNS on that specific machine, so it always forwards the ports you need.
