I’ve used both PCLinuxOS BE and Ubuntu Server edition. They’re both good, but PCLOSBE includes a console, so you can work on the server from the server (or remotely – it includes Webmin).
I also run a server at home on Windows XP with no problem.
LAMPP or WAMPP, of course – why use an inferior solution?
I would suggest ubuntu server 8.10 as it can take advantage of cloud computing.
It has some great integration tools with amazon (AWS) and it will constantly get updates.
While it is exciting to host your own server, it is a difficult task, since you need to take care of a lot of issues like power, backup and maintenance.
You can host your domain, just for kicks. I am a linux geek too, I hang out at the terminal all the time. I still host at external servers.
