it’s not just on the issue of hardware that you should consider when considering a computer performance. the bigger the memory, the better. the faster the processor, the better.
but if you’re hosting an online game, hardware performance matters but the bandwidth matters a lot too. you might want to check the bandwidth of your internet connection to optimize your hosting capability.
What game are you hosting? It all depends on the resources required by the games server daemon. I’ve hosted Wolf:ET servers on dedicated boxes with 1 gig of ram fine, but you need to look at the requirements of the game you are hosting. Usually the requirements are not as high as hosting from within your game client (since you are gaming ON TOP of it). Make sure the dedicated box provides plenty of bandwidth as well. I’ve hosted with theplanet in the past and they’re pretty good.
