Recently, I created a new site, and as a learning experience, would like to host it not from a 3rd party hosting plan, but from home on a spare desktop.

I’m planning on using Apache, and a Linux OS, as I already know how to use Apache, and would like to learn more about Linux-based OS’s.

So, any suggestions on what OS I should use? Thanks in advance!

Hi. I was interested in starting a small website from my house. I am currently using a Macbook running Mac OS X with a Linksys router. I setup my Macbook so that it has a static ipv4 on my local network (it’s ip is permanently 192.168.1.2). I then went to my router’s local web address (192.168.1.1) and configured port forwarding so that all http requests sent to the router are forwarded to my computer (192.168.1.2). After this I guess I would register a domain on a website like godaddy.com and then have this domain point to the external domain of my router and then configure the DNS servers (I am not completely clear on how to do this). The problem with this is of course that a Macbook is probably not the best system to be hosting a website on. Can anyone tell me what the best system to run a website on would be and what the best operating system (Linux maybe)? Also, do I need a better router to handle all of the requests or is a Linksys fine (keep in mind that I don’t plan to serve more than a hundred people on this site at once).

PS: If you think it is possible for me to run a small, hundred or so user website on a Macbook with Apache please say so as I’m am not really inclined to purchase a new computer.

Thank you in advance!

HI all.
I’ve recently moved a load of web page files from one URL to another. However, all of the key words & description tags within the site point to the old URL when typed into google, despite the fact that I didn’t even add the keyword/description tags until after I uploaded to the files to the new URL.

So, with the very kind advice of another yahoo member, I decided to have a go at loading a .htacces file into my root file and use a 301 redirect protocol.

The hosting company which I use, run Linux servers which I believe, are the only ones which understand this type of protocol and my site is in HTML.

I have only just uploaded the .htacces file but, when I type into google the relevant key words, it still points to the old URL. Does Google need time to index this?

Here’s the .htacces file:

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
rewritecond %{http_host} ^beautyboxworcester.co.uk [nc]
rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.beautyboxworcester.co.uk/$1
[r=301,nc]

I hope you’ll can help!!!!!!

Thankyou very much.

Alright, how should I begin…

My dad runs a Dell PowerEdge 6450 as a domain controller for our home computers and a web server to host pages for non-profits.
We had been using Windows Server 2000 as the operating system but after the S.A.M. file for it became corrupt we decided that it was a good time to try something a little bit less ‘obsolete’ so we went out and downloaded the ISO for Ubuntu Server 10.10 and burned it to a CD (using InfraRecorder).

I’ve been trying to install Ubuntu on the server as a dual boot, but I consistently get this error message early on during the Installation:
“Your installation CD-ROM couldn’t be mounted. This probably means that the CD-ROM was not in the drive. If so you can insert it and try again.”

Because I’m here now it should be obvious that the CD-ROM was in fact in the drive…
Anyhow, I’ve tried trouble-shooting via information from older discussions about the issue and I’d read that setting ‘ide=nodma’ would resolve it in some cases so I went ahead and tried installing with that command concatenated to the installation line (being a Linux newbie I have no idea if I did this correctly but the installer seemed to accept it), but alas the error was encountered as usual.

At this point I was advised by a class mate to just try a different version of Linux, so I downloaded Fedora 14 LXDE and burned it to a CD (again, with InfraRecorder).
Just as with Ubuntu the Fedora installer begins but quickly encounters problems, this time resulting in this message:
“The media check is complete, the result is: FAIL.
It is not recommended to use this media.

Mount: /dev/sr0: Can’t read superblock
dracut: FATAL: Failed to mount block device of live image
dracut: Refusing to continue

No root device found

Boot has failed, sleeping forever.”

After this my dad decided to try creating CD of Fedora with GNOME in stead of LXDE (this time using PowerISO to burn the image to the disk), and 15 minutes into the burn it failed with the following message:
“Error writing data.(118-00015030 9a579d5C)”

This might be coincidence, but it suggests to me that the problem may lie with the rewrite drive being faulty on the computer we’d been using to burn the CDs.

What should I do now?
Is the problem with the server’s CD-ROM drive? Am I somehow creating bad image burns? Is there some other sort of incompatibility that I’m unaware of?

I’d appreciate any opinions on this especially from those with Linux experience, I’m feeling pretty lost right now.
To Colanth:
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that the installer would even begin if the CD hadn’t been created as an ISO.
The computer does try to boot from the cds, for both disks the GUI comes up and allows me to choose an action (eg. install Ubuntu Server, install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, etc), it is only after making a selection and the disk mount initialization step begins that these problems become apparent.

I just tried making a new burn of Ubuntu Server 10.10 with PowerISO, the burn failed identically to the Fedora GNOME attempt, it would seem either PowerISO doesn’t work or it’s confirming that my RW drive is faulty and I need to try creating the burns on a different computer…

Linux/Unix (RedHat, Debian, FreeBSD, Mandrake, etc.) or Windows OS, Apache Web Server, PHP 4.1 and higher (Apache and CGI modules), MySQL 4.1 and higher, GD lib 1.8 and higher, Cron Jobs, ionCube Loader for the license files, open IN and OUT TCP connection on ports 999, 1982 and 1983.
